Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

A single player remained positive throughout. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He spent the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the nature of his skill set. Billed as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
